Master plan for five projects near Shwedagon

Yangon - A master plan to construct five high-rise buildings near the famous Shwedagon Pagoda is underway to avoid damage on the structure of the pagoda and it is expected to be finalised in June, according to the Building Department under Yangon City Dev

The Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) suspended the construction temporarily in February to carry out further assessment on whether they would have negative impact over the famous landmarks near the Shwedagon Pagoda.

MIC has submitted the master plan to Yangon regional government and the YCDC and experts from the Myanmar Engineering Society have inspected the projects and technical standards.

The six points included in the master plan are:

- Not to damage the base of Shwedagon Pagoda

- Not to knock down too much over the parts of the Theingotedara Hill

- To make changes in architecture style to prevent further damage to surrounding areas

- To develop all five projects together

- To preserve water drainage system and

- To build more roads in the areas to ease traffic jam.

“We will allow them to construct five mega projects near Shwedagon Pagoda but we will not allow them to dig very deep which can damage the stability of the pagoda,” said an official from the Building Department.
