“We managed to export over 1.2 million tonne last fiscal year 2014-15. The expected export amount is 1.3 million a year. But we have low crop yields in three major export produce – green grams, pigeon beans and mung beans,” said Min Ko Oo, secretary of the association.
Since April 1, about 150,000 tonnes of green grams and 100,000 tonnes of pigeon beans have been exported.
“This year’s produce is not encouraging. Let’s hope for the next year,” he continued.
The yields of green grams, pigeon beans and mung beans are about 300,000 tonnes, 150,000 tonnes and 200,000 tonnes this year – relatively lower than the previous years’ 600,000 tonnes, 300,000 tonnes and 300,000 tonnes respectively.
The market price of various beans has been increasing in the past few days with the price of green grams going up to Ks 1.3 million (US$1,300) a tonne last week – the highest in 10 years.
“But the price dropped a bit – it’s Ks 1.25 million this week. The price changes in relation to the demand from India,” said a merchant.
