Red Cross sets up emergency fund for Myanmar flood victims

YANGON - The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is planning to provide aid, including vocational training, in flood-hit regions through an emergency fund.

It is asking for a US$4.1-million emergency fund to provide relief and rehabilitation aid to Magway and Sagaing regions and Chin States.
“In three flood-hit regions, we aim to assist 25 per cent of flood victims with aid. They will need basic relief items until next month. We will provide not only cash assistance but also basic infrastructure, housing, artesian wells and toilets for long-term assistance,” said an IFRC representative in Myanmar.
Since the beginning of the floods in mid-July, more than 500 volunteers have been engaged in the regions where there are an estimated 50,000 flood victims.
The IFRC emergency fund aims to assist 100,000 people, including those in Rakhine State.
Nearly one million acres of irrigated farmland have been flooded.
Red Cross volunteers evacuated more than 1,970 families from 21 villages in Myanaung Township, Ayeyawady Region, to 33 relief camps and provided medical treatment.
The government said 1.3 million people were affected by the flooding.
