Bagan to charge entrance fee in kyat

Bagan to charge entrance fee in kyat

Myanmar will resume the collection of entrance fee to its famous historic site in Bagan in local currency, starting next month.

Since the beginning of this year, foreigners are required to pay 20 US dollar. From November 1, they are to pay Ks25,000.
According to the Culture Ministry, since the charge was collected in dollars, the Myanmar Foreign Trade Bank found many notes were damaged, frayed or defaced. Meanwhile, the use of dollars also contributed to widespread dollarisation.
The Central Bank of Myanmar recently urged all government agencies to execute transactions in the local currency, in light of sharp depreciation of the kyat against US dollar.
Charging the Bagan entrance fee in kyats, calculated with the most recent Central Bank of Myanmar value, is one of many attempts to boost kyat usage.
