Kayah political parties demand development from NLD

Loikaw - Political parties based in Kayah State will call on the National League for Democracy (NLD), which won the recent national elections by a landslide, to fulfil their basic development needs in an effective manner once they take power.

“The incoming government should place an emphasis on infrastructure developments in Kayah State. Moreover, educational needs and healthcare services should be carried out in an effective manner,” said a statement by a group of parties based in Kayah State.
“The national education system must be reformed. A better syllabus for primary education must be prescribed. The salaries of schoolteachers should be increased. Basic knowledge of ethnic minority languages should be disseminated at basic education schools in order to preserve ethnic traditional customs,” said Khu Phoe Yal, the chairman of different national races democracy party[JG1] .
“Trade routes should be created in Kayah State. New villages and wards should be extended to ensure that working-class people can be provided accommodations,” said Du Kyi, the joint-secretary of the Kayah Ethnic Democracy Party[JG2] , said.
“We have young, educated people in our state. Job opportunities should be created for them.  The state police force should favour young graduates from the state for appointments as civil servants,” Du Kyi added.
“All ethnic minorities would demand to cooperate closely in the defence of the region and carry out security measures, as well as solving farmland problems. Traditional land ownership should be taken into consideration,” said Khun Arphara Doe, secretary of the Kayan National Party.
“Our state has huge natural resources. The people who live here should enjoy equitable distributions of the profits from the natural resources. Natural resources should be generated according to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), so as not to cause serious damage to the natural environment,” Khun Arphara Doe added.
The NLD won 26 out of 34, or 76 per cent, of parliamentary seats in Kayah State in the 2015 national election.
