Kuki minority asks for census data about exact numbers

Yangon - The committee representing Kuki ethnic affairs has asked for the details of 2014 census to be released so it can find the group's exact size.

The group told a Myanmar Journalist Network press conference in Yangon that the ethnic names and population breakdown from the census should be revealed.

It praised the census, the first completed since 1983.

At a conference for the Kuki ethnic group held in Tamu, Chin State, in 2013 it was agreed the term "914 - Kuki" would be used in the national census.

The Kuki has sub-tribes, the Kaungsaichin, Gwetae and Htado under the code number 409, 413 and 427 respectively. However, all sub-tribes of Kuki gave their names under the number 914 in order to protect their rights in line with the Constitution. The Kuki live in upper Sagaing Region, upper Chin State, Yangon Region and Mandalay Region.

However, ethnic minorities who do not have a specific code number were put under 914 in the census, leading to demands that the group should be able to establish its exact numbers.
