App aims to turn any PC game into virtual reality

GAMING startup Clovr has taken to the crowd sourcing platform Kickstarter to raise funds to build a mobile app that will turn any PC game into virtual reality (VR).

The company, based in Kuala Lumpur, said users will be able to view the game in VR through their phones so they don’t have to invest heavily in hardware and only needed a headset to mount the phone.
“Whatever game your PC is capable of running, Clovr is able to turn into VR,” it posted on the site.
There will be no wires as the stereoscopic image will be transmitted to the phone via WiFi.
It also utilises the smartphone’s built-in gyroscope for head tracking and 3DOF (three degrees of freedom), allowing users to perform three types of rotations – pitch, yaw & roll.
 "VR gaming is all about experiencing the game in a lifelike manner, and a bunch of cables would only get in the way. Using WiFi, Clovr transmits VR content to your phone, allowing you to freely roam while gaming in VR,” it posted.
While it would work with any PC game, the team found that it worked best for first-person shooters and role-playing games.
Clovr said it has tested the app with a number of popular games, including Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, DOTA 2, Dying Light, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Half Life 1 and 2, Borderlands 2, and Portal 2.
“Most games should be able to run on Clovr. However, if you have a game you would like us to test out and optimise, just send us a message and we’ll help you figure it out,” it posted.
The company aimed to raise S$5,000 to put the finishing touches on the user interface and design. Additional funds would go towards app optimisation and new features.
Basic rewards started from S$2 to show support or S$3 for a three month subscription, plus Kickstarter exclusives like a lifetime subscription and beta access for S$50.
The deadline for the Kickstarter campaign is May 5, while the beta access will be available by June and standard access by July.
The team behind Clovr are its founder and chief technology officer Gan Chee Yong; co-founder and lead developer Lee Yew Chun; co-founder and tech consultant Albert Quek; business development team members Jan Wong and Daryll Tan; and digital marketing strategists Zewin Leung and Jeremy Ng.
Clovr admitted there were risks and challenges, including potential bugs and compatibility issues in the early stages, a need to develop an iOS version, and widening game compatibility.
“Our dream is for everyone to enjoy their favourite games on VR with Clovr. Users may run into hiccups when it comes to running certain games.
This is why in addition to continually testing new games on Clovr, our team is committed to troubleshoot and help you optimise your favourite games if you face any problems,” it said.
