Opposition to new car policy seems self-centred

Those of you who slam the government's first car policy: well, let me guess, you are at least 40, own one or more cars, or have owned at least one car, earn more than Bt60,000 a month, and did not vote Pheu Thai.

It is self-centred to say that the scheme would worsen traffic and cause more pollution and accidents. It's like saying that I have my cars and that's that - I don't want more cars on the road. The traffic and air quality are bad enough as it is. Young people (who aren't my children) don't deserve a car. You should ride buses, or motorcycle taxis, or walk.

Well, do you remember how sweet it was to own your first car? Do you remember the sense of freedom, independence and pride and the new car smell? You even left the plastic seat covers on for months. Do you remember the wonderful feeling of being able to go anywhere and anytime you liked? I do, and I want young people who have never owned a car to experience what I did.
