I would refer Dr Virabongsa to, among others, William Gladstone: “If you want to succeed in politics, you must keep your conscience well under control”; and Thomas Jefferson: “Whenever a man has cast a longing eye on (offices), a rottenness begins in his conduct.” When, for example, a medical doctor can become minister of finance despite not knowing what gross national product is, or a nurse become his deputy despite not knowing what value added tax is (as their initial public interviews revealed), I suggest that voters have every reason to mistrust Thai politicians.
Merely being elected doesn’t make one qualified, whether in economics or any other field.
