Voters not concerned at Yingluck's gaffes

In her column "Yingluck waiting for the Hollywood moment" (May 5), columnist Veena Thoopkrajae gives us the standard middle class metropolitan view of the PM, describing her as "funny and goofy", but it is noticeable that Yingluck's gaffes that so co

Nor do they seem to concern the international press, who generally portray the PM as a welcome breath of fresh air in Thai politics and as having coped competently with a difficult first year in office.
Those that portray Yingluck as a hapless puppet would do well to read the Wikileaks documents that cover former US ambassador Eric John’s meetings with Yingluck, after the last meeting (in 2009) he reported to Washington that she had become “far more poised” and noted that “she spoke with confidence about Pheu Thai Party operations, strategy and goals and deferred less to Noppadon, who has accompanied her to all our sessions”.
Of course Veena’s standards will have been set high by exposure to the likes of Prime Minister Abhisit, whilst the US ambassador’s experience will have been coloured by exposure to presidents Ronald Reagan and George W Bush, both of whom were known for mis-speaking from time to time.
