Great cakes come in for a landing

Airhostess Nunthida Thumtamala soars with sweets at De La Belle

On her days off, airline cabin attendant Nunthida Thumtamala has always spoiled herself visiting the bakeries and cafes in every city where she’s stayed, sampling anything exotic and everything sweet.

Back in Bangkok she honed her baking skills with the help of tutorials posted on YouTube and created her own innovative pastry recipes that combined Japanese and French styles and great flavours. Nunthida’s range of homemade cakes was first served up in cyberspace two years ago.
And now she’s opened the cafe called De La Belle at the Thanya Shopping Park. Boasting a fairytale atmosphere with pink walls, comfy white sofas and natural-wood tables, it can seat 10.
“I love eating and I love making cakes,” she says. “My desserts are adapted from Japanese and French ideas – soft and creamy but not too sweet. I used the best ingredients, like whipped cream from France, to guarantee the quality and flavour.”
The favourite items include cakes like aromatic Matcha Tiramisu, Cheery Lemon Cheesecake, Caramel Walnut Chocolate Fudge, Creamy White Chocolate Strawberry Swirl Cheesecake and Australian Afternoon Tea Mille.
But the must-try treat is a very smooth and light crepe cake in different flavours, like cream cheese, tiramisu, passion fruit and Thai tea. I also sampled a Bt90 plate of smooth three-layered butter cake served in milk, a layered young-coconut crepe cake for Bt120 and soft orange carrot cake for Bt120, all of which go well with hot tea for Bt60 a pot.
Another highlight is the colourful scrumptious macaroons – White Chocolate, Rose, Peach & Passion Fruit, Berry Tea, Honey Citron Tea, Australian Afternoon Tea, Black Sesame, Carrot, Rose Lychee, Matcha, Nutella Peanut Butter and Madagascar Vanilla. They’re Bt38 apiece and go for Bt180 and Bt320 in box sets.
“Our macaroons have a strong flavour and they’re crispy on the outside and soft on the inside,” says Nunthida. “I also offer a selection of aromatic coffee blended from Arabic and Rubusta too.”
