According to a source at the Thai club, the 63-year-old has already agreed to replace Serb coach Slavisa Jokanovic, who guided Muang Thong to the league title in his first season in charge of the team last term. The German is due to be officially unveiled as the club’s new trainer at a press conference tomorrow.
Schaefer’s move to Muang Thong represents a solution to the headache suffered by the Thai FA as it sought to end the German’s contract following Thailand’s poor run of results. It now appears certain that Kiatisak Senamuang will come in to replace the veteran German coach on a caretaker basis, with a friendly against China on June 15 set to be the former national striker’s first game in charge of the Thailand team.
The experienced Schaefer also seems a good fit for Muang Thong, after the three-time TPL champions were overtaken at the top of the standings last weekend by bitter rivals Buriram United following a 1-1 draw at home to Osotspa.
It was revealed that Schaefer, whose managerial career at club level included spells with German outfits Karlsruher and Stuttgart, attended that match on Sunday at Muang Thong’s SCG stadium to negotiate personal terms with the club’s management.
Meanwhile, Schaefer yesterday used his Facebook page to confirm his exit from the national post he has held since June 2011.
“Yesterday the FA of Thailand and me cancelled our contract by mutual agreement. I am very sad about this development. I had a fantastic time with the kindest, good-hearted players. I wish them all the best for the future. I will give you more information soon. Thank you for your support.”
