A new bar on Sukhumvit invites patrons to enjoy art lessons while enjoying a beer

BORED BANGKOKIANS now have a new way to enjoy nightlife with the opening of Paintbar, a downtown hangout that combines drinks and food with art classes. Located on the rooftop of the Piman 49 complex on Sukhumvit Soi 49, it’s an ideal place to learn the basics of drawing and painting with professional instructors while sipping on a glass of wine and munching some tapas.
Decorated in chic industrial loft style, the one-month-old bar is run by Mek Monsereenusorn and Varit Bulakul and inspired by a paint bar in Boston and boasts 30 wooden tables and chairs, each equipped with an easel, brushes and acrylic colours.
The three instructors are graduates in fine and applied arts, decorative arts and architecture from Chulalongkorn and Silpakorn Universities and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Lat Krabang and have plenty of patience as they offer tips and guide brushes on the canvas. A class starts at Bt649 – book online for discounts – and private classes that include food and beverages are also available.
The bar is well stocked with beer, champagne and wines including an excellent Robert Mondavi Sauvignon Blanc, Atitude Rouge Pinot Noir, Pommery Brut Royal and Craft Beer Brew Dog Punk IPA. For the non-imbibers, there’s fruit-flavoured Sake Jelly (Bt269) and coffee starting at Bt95.
The kitchen is small but serves an interesting range of tapas including meatballs in tomato sauce and prawns in oily spicy garlic sauce.
Other nibbles include a Liver Pate Baguette served with salsa and tortilla chips and fresh bread (Bt119) and desserts including homemade cakes Blueberry Cheesecake, Crepe Cake with strawberry sauce and Red Velvet (Bt99)
