The right to speak one’s mind publicly and promote one’s ideas is eroding democracy itself.
In a democracy, the electorate votes for its lawmakers who introduce laws as a result of debate and argument. There is a democratic process to law making. The resulting laws control the country and its people.
However, 1,400-year-old laws from a foreign culture have been allowed to operate in the name of democracy in the UK. Sharia laws include misogyny, punishing theft by hand amputation and adultery by stoning.
Followers of this ideology also openly voice their intention to gain control by universal suffrage, which is another principle of democracy. Any vote, majority or otherwise, which is for replacing democracy with totalitarianism as the form of government, should simply be outlawed. Democracy for its very survival has to ban any freedom which threatens its very self. It must not commit suicide by allowing the abuse of its own principles and the introduction of undemocratic laws.
Any attempt to replace people’s democratic freedom with medieval laws has no place in a 21st century democratic society.
The free country of which I was once so proud is dying before our eyes.
