It offends Thai ears too

Re: "No escape from the noise", Letters, April 22

Jingo of Sattahip has my fullest sympathy over some Thais being “brain-dead/stone deaf”.
Except for the BTS responding to complaints about the noisy TV sets on the Skytrain, no “stone-deaf” officials have ever acted on letters of complaint. The mai pen rai (never mind) mentality rules our society. Yes, Prime Minister Prayut, sock it to us with Article 44 – please give us more! For a start, please transfer inactive police officers to the troubled South. Those late-night karaoke bars with booming-bass vibrations, louder after midnight, are the worst culprits.
The sound of silence with occasional bird chirps is my favourite song of the year, when temporary Bangkokians migrate in droves to their hometowns for Songkran, thereby allowing my ears to recuperate.
Akin to this is the sound of music at some Chinese weddings, where no civil conversation can be engaged in, and in some cases not even with the person sitting next to you. It is worse if you are a guest of honour, up front amid the musicians.
Well, to our expatriate friends, the pain is not exclusively yours but also ours.
I also feel somewhat guilty over my fellow citizens for being so brain-dead and stone deaf.
