Chatree gold mine not the source of cyanide leak

Re: "Contradictory claims over cyanide leaks", National, May 20.

Akara Resources PCL would like to respond to points in Wednesday’s report that are incorrect or require clarification.

Akara Resources, operator of the Chatree gold mine, adheres to the highest international standards of cyanide management. Akara was one of the first signatories to the international code for the handling and storage of cyanide.
We welcome academic study and testing of our tailings-storage facility. We conduct a monthly test for cyanide at the tailings monitoring site and storage facility as well as on any water around the mine. The tests are performed by ALS, one of the world’s largest testing services, and the results – which are passed on to the government – have always been within acceptable levels.
The only possible explanation for any elevated cyanide readings in the area around the mine is the unregulated use of pesticide.
Akara has always said that, if we are found to be the cause of any contamination, we will take immediate steps to rectify the situation, but we are confident that this alleged cyanide leak has not come from us. We are 100-per-cent certain that there have been no leaks to the outside and surrounding area, since we use cyanide only within a closed area. Akara Resources is working under the terms of the EHIA and the supervision of the Department of Primary Industries and Mines. We would never operate in a way that contravened Thai law or harmed the community or environment in which we all live.
