Eric Bahrt asks how possible is it for authorities to know that Thais who have been accused of lese majeste and who have escaped abroad to threaten Thailand’s sovereignty. I think that’s an unintelligent question.
The lese majeste law was written to protect Thailand’s sovereignty as well as the monarchy.
Authorities must have evidence that people have broken this law in order to prosecute. For example, if I am positive that I have not breached any law, why would I run away?
Bahrt also asks why the public is not informed of what was said, which would ascertain that the lese majeste law has been violated. The answer is that repeating the offensive words would land the repeater in trouble too.
That is why this law should be amended – but not annulled, as those fugitive offenders have demanded.
