Mr AS Pingar is right to say the Islamic State has triggered deep anxieties across the world, but I am perplexed by his claim that Syria’s President Assad is responsible for this situation. It is clear that the Islamic State is funded by Saudi Arabia and its allied partners in the Gulf, with the tacit approval of the US, whose only goal is to defeat Assad in order to appropriate Syria’s oil reserves. We have already seen the mayhem created by the “liberation” of Libya, Egypt and especially Iraq. Those countries are in an abysmal mess and in a much worse state than under the “dictatorship” of their former presidents.

Clueless new Philippine generation risks repeating history
I am 75 years old. I was outside the walls of Philippine police headquarters at Camp Crame with my wife during the 1986 Edsa Revolution when Army Colonel Antonio Sotelo was ordered by President Ferdinand Marcos to bomb us. Instead he landed his helicopter inside Camp Crame.
I witnessed those dark days and join others who rose up against the dictator in vowing, “Never again.” Unfortunately, many of the younger generation are not aware of the atrocities of the Marcos regime, so we are in danger of repeating history.
