Plan to cut subsidies is a slap in the face for seniors
Re: “Our seniors need more help, not less”, Editorial, May 18.
Your editorial hit the nail on the head in pointing out that the Finance Ministry’s plan to reduce old-age subsidies mocks the government’s own efforts to prepare for our rapidly ageing society in the future.
Old people on low incomes deserve the subsidies because they have been on the losing side in our dog-eat-dog society in their younger days.
Those who are wealthier also deserve support because they have likely paid taxes for three or four decades and thus contributed to the country’s development. The subsidies they are receiving might not seem much, but for some they mean survival.
The Finance Ministry is managing the country’s economy in an unintelligent and obstinate manner. Economic ministers who are incapable of doing their jobs effectively should resign so that the country can move forward to a brighter future.
