A total of 643 athletes and officials from 17 nations will take part in the Thailand Open Karate-Do Championship at the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium next week.

The sixth edition of the five-day tournament starts on Tuesday and features both combat (Kumite) and display (Kata) categories that encompass 52 events in all.

“The tournament has been organised so that our athletes can sharpen their skills against international competition,” said Thailand Karate Federation president Jutinan Bhirombhakdi.

“Last year several Thai stars emerged, including Tippawan Khamsri and Arm Sukkaire [winners in the senior Kumite women’s team] who have become key members of the national team.”

The Thai karate body is sending its athletes to more international events in a bid for glory at the 2020 Olympics Games in Japan.
