My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones, but the boat was rated for 50 people, not the more than 100 onboard. The operator allowed it to be overloaded. An expired license is not a factor in his carelessness. An overloaded boat is prone to capsizing. With the facts so clear, why would the pilgrims consider alternative means of transportation? What about better regulation to prevent boats from being overloaded? What about self-regulation – not getting on a boat that’s overloaded?
I was in Ayutthaya and saw the boat after it capsized. That part of the river has very strong currents and great skill and safety measures are needed for safe passage. Boating is a safe method of transportation as long as the right procedures and precautions are adhered to.
