For the new collection, creative director Anna Teurnell has picked iconic garments from Marimekko's design archive from the 1960s and 1970s, reintroducing the iconic ready-to-wear pieces and sharing a playful use of the print in relation to the silhouette of the garment.
Top models sashayed gracefully on the catwalk during the recent launch event at its store in Central World in front of such A-listers as MR Chantaraladda Yugala, Krit Jirakietwattana, Panida Iemsirinoppakul, Piyawat Kempetch, Ploy Chariyaves, Saengkhae Hemkamonset and Sawitri Rochanapru
Teurnell says the ready-to-wear collection celebrates the timelessness of Marimekko design.
“The collection brings together revolutionary thoughts from Marimekko's early years with new, surprising ideas that add to the continuum of our design heritage today. I have personally been very inspired by Marimekko's archives and in particular the garments I've picked out for this collection. The architectonic dress is one of the emblems of Marimekko design, and these pieces capture the essence of our line. I find it remarkable that designs from decades ago feel so interesting and relevant still today, and I think that is what makes Marimekko so special."
Marimekko also treated regular customers to a workshop in which they could turn the brand’s colourful prints into a gift for a loved one. Panida “Tukta” Iemsirinoppakul was on hand to show guests how to make a frame using Marimekko fabrics.
“Personally, I like Marimekko’s classic creativity and the brand’s spirit,” Panida says. “I have a lot of Marimekko items that I use regularly – towels, cups, plates, napkins, bags, and clothes. I always carry a Marimekko tote too and I especially like the Unikko print. Marimekko is known for its bold and colorful prints, so I think the prints can be used to make special presents, and a frame is a nice gift because it frames a special picture.”
