“The work of medical technologists is a behind-the- scenes job, meaning that most people are not aware of what they do. However, medical technologists play important roles in our lives, from birth to death,” says Somchai Jeadsermanant, president of the Association of Medical Technologists of Thailand.
Factors that enhance laboratory capabilities for achieving the most efficiency and effectiveness range from qualified personnel to reliable and accurate diagnostics devices, with much more in between.
Dr Charoen Chantavanich, director of the Mobile Health Check-up Unit, Bangpakok 9 International Hospital, says that currently 60 per cent of medical decisions are based on laboratory results. He adds that personalised care is becoming a healthcare trend in the digital era and is expected to increasingly contribute to prevention and delay of genetic disorders, deadly diseases and chronic diseases among Thai people, thus helping to reduce healthcare costs.
Associate Professor Vip Viprakasit from Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital notes that a laboratory examination is the heart of a clinical diagnosis as it provides doctors with data that will be used to prevent and treat a disease precisely and quickly. It cannot be overlooked in terms of investing in necessary innovations and technologies.
“Doctors must keep up with new diagnostic approaches because using the same old approaches will yield only same predictable results. However, using new medical diagnostics disciplines appropriately will offer better outcomes in terms of patient treatments,” he says.
