Blasphemy conviction also befell Islamic prophet Jesus Christ

Re: “Indonesian government’s response to editorial on blasphemy verdict”, Have Your Say, May 17.

It comes as no surprise that the Indonesian government, through its minister counsellor for information, should respond to your editorial on the blasphemy verdict by piously invoking the law. If it’s the law, it must be right. Right?
Wrong. The law is made by human beings. Human beings are fallible. Therefore the law is also fallible. QED.
Fortunately, the law can be amended or abrogated if we have wise legislators. May I remind the wise legislators of Indonesia (all or most of whom are presumably Muslims) that Islam recognises Jesus Christ as a prophet. Jesus was convicted of blasphemy by the Jewish Sanhedrin (see Matthew 26: 63-66) and was subsequently put to death by the Roman governor. When a prophet can be put to death for blasphemy, those who advocate blasphemy laws might want to think again.
