Making of a ‘Rebel’

Making of a ‘Rebel’

Last month Thai Film Archive’s World Class Cinema Screenings brought back happy memories of kungfu legend Bruce Lee with the movie “The Big Boss” which shot most entirely in Thailand.

This month, the event turns its attention to another blast from the past, screening “Rebel Without a Cause” starring iconic actor James Dean this Sunday (July 2) at noon at Scala Theatre Bangkok.
The 1955 film was released just a month after Dean’s untimely death in an automobile accident. Recognised as one of the very first teen films, the film tells the story of Jim Stark (Dean) who moves to Los Angeles with his family. There he meets John “Plato” Crawford (Sal Mineo) and Judy (Natalie Wood) and the three become friends.
The film received three Academy Awards nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Mineo), Best Supporting Actress (Wood) and Best Motion Picture Story (Nicholas Ray). Dean was not nominated for his role in this film, instead earning the nomination for Best Actor for his first major film role, “East of Eden” (1955). He was also nominated as Best Actor the following year for his performance as Jett Rink in his third and final film, “Giant” (1956) released in 1956, a year after his death
Dean became the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and remains the only actor to have had two posthumous acting nominations
Admission to Sunday’s screening is Bt100 and advance tickets are now available at the cinema. Find out more from the Film Archive at (02) 482 201314 and Scala Theatre at (02) 251 2861
