Is it fair to ask tourists to show Bt20,000?

Re: “Some tourist visa holders being asked to show Bt20,000 in cash when entering Thailand”, The Nation, yesterday.

A bank machine and one inquiry would show your available funds. And Bt20,000 is just under 600 bucks, so it a good way to stop fraud.

I was asked to do the same to enter the UK. So fair play, I guess.

Shouldn’t the proof be asked for during the visa’s issuance?
John Lloyd
Maybe tourists should just mail the government a cheque and then simply stay home. It would save a lot of wasted time, money and confusion, rather than actually trying to come here.
