The licenses may be “smart” (?), but will the drivers?

Having smart licences is all very well, assuming of course that you can get the millions of Thais who don’t have a license to be bothered to actually get one.

Yes, nice new shiny smart cards will ensure better driving. As usual, a facade solution.

The licences may go up to international standards level, but the drivers still remain at international disaster level.

What does it feel like to be a super-intelligent, first-class driver in a country of lazy idiots?
I’d like to know because that’s not my experience at all. Cut the white colonialist crap, please.

In March this year I used my two-year Thai driver’s licence in the UK. In fact the girl at the hire company asked if I had an overseas licence, since it was less hassle than having to register on the .gov website and having to get a reference number to allow the hire company to access my driving history.

Spent 11 hours last week waiting to renew my licence. Can hardly wait to go and queue for this new one.

Looks the same as the one I got last week. It has a black strip on the back. How much smarter do they get? The sign where I got my photo taken was in Thai, but did say “smart card – 100 baht”. I paid my Bt100, so maybe I have one.
