Jesus, real or not, had a lesson

Re: “The Old Testament is revelatory reading”, Have Your Say, May 12

What have the Old Testament, evangelicals or even God and the Bible to do with the subject of my previous letter? The subject was the fundamental teachings of Jesus Christ as taught under the heading Christianity.   Egon should refer to what is written not what he would like to see written. He should try responding appropriately, not coughing up irrelevant, preconceived notions stored up in support of his fixed agenda.
Whether or not Jesus even existed, the fact remains that the principles known as Christianity are those that form the basis of Western democratic civilisation. They teach social cohesion through love of fellow man and peaceful co-existence. Even Moses covered these in his Ten Commandments. Commandments 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are devoted to human behaviour. If we define “God” as “all natural forces”, then Commandments 1-4 make realistic sense and are sound advice on protecting the environment upon which life depends.
Even were Christ and Moses nothing more than mythological figures, their attributed principles make for the good common sense that underpins Western civilisation.
