Finally, cooperation to end cruel abuse of these gentle Thai giants

Re: “Like PETA, Minor Hotels is serious about elephant welfare in Thailand”, Opinion & Analysis, October 8.

I applaud the Thailand Elephant Polo Association for finally stopping this barbaric abuse of elephants, which some people refer to as a “sport”. It’s also good to see that the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation supports the move, and is open to meeting with PETA to promote real welfare and conservation efforts for elephants, not just pretending to do so for ulterior motives.
People are more and more aware of the suffering caused to elephants in captivity. It’s time that the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Weerasak Kowsurat, showed that Thailand is properly in tune with modern views, by banning all tourism and sports that treat elephants inhumanely, including using them to play polo and for tourist rides.
Elephants aren’t here for human entertainment. Their home is in the wild.
