Solution to Songkran tragedy is right in front of our eyes

Solution to Songkran tragedy is right in front of our eyes

There’s a simple rule whose adoption would save hundreds of lives every year in Thailand. Simply declare that ALL non-essential motorcycles are to be banned from being driven on the “7 dangerous days” of Songkran.

Motorcycle taxis, okay. Home/commercial emergencies, okay. Deliveries, okay.
But all other riders – sober or drunk – are to be arrested if they drive a bike during Songkran week.
Motorcycle accidents account for about 80 per cent of road deaths during celebrations for the traditional New Year.
Imagine if Lee Kuan Yew had faced a similar problem in Singapore. He certainly would not have tolerated such annual carnage when a simple solution was at hand.
NO MOTORCYCLES on the dangerous days.
