Editorial was a disgusting attack on a national hero

It was an utter disappointment to read The Nation’s editorial of May 29, titled “Prem was NO FRIEND of the people”, which painted a completely one-sided and unfairly negative portrayal of General Prem Tinsulanonda.

Surely, a leading newspaper such as The Nation should be more balanced and less opinionated in views that it shares with its readers. In this case, we find the editorial to be offensive, crude and, generally speaking, outright nasty.
The editorial completely overlooks the countless good deeds that General Prem performed for the country. He was the ultimate statesman, not only within Thailand but also the region at large. The eight years that General Prem served as prime minister was a period of great stability and unprecedented economic growth for the Kingdom. His far-sighted domestic security policy was credited with ending the communist insurgency, while his economic initiatives such as the Eastern Seaboard project paved the way for greater prosperity for the nation in the years ahead. Above all, his selfless dedication and sacrifice to the country and the monarchy, as well as his incorruptible character, should serve as a shining example and role model for younger generations.
For all of the above reasons and more, the nation and its people owe General Prem a great debt – and this is how he deserves to be remembered.
