Liverpool FC clinched the Carabao Cup at Wembley on Sunday after winning a nerve-shredding penalty shootout 11-10 against Chelsea.

The game had ended 0-0 after extra time before Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga sent the decisive penalty kick over the bar. Chelsea had earlier had three goals ruled out by VAR during the match, while the Reds had one chalked off.

It was Liverpool’s first League Cup win for a decade and the first under Jürgen Klopp. The club had won the League Cup eight times before – in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2001, 2003 and 2012.

The latest win made the Reds the most successful team in League Cup history, with nine wins.

The Carabao Cup is the fifth major trophy of Klopp’s managerial tenure, adding to the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Liverpool FC’s overall honours list now includes 49 major trophies.
