Fix our own problems first

Re: "On Palestine, Spineless Thai Diplomacy", October 3.

Perhaps Kavi Chongkittavorn, instead of concentrating his thoughts on the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian political stalemate, should divert his attention to the mess that is Thailand and try to improve the situation at home and shed some tears for this country and its people.
Thailand today is a country that is rotten to the core, penetrated with a rot that is destroying the culture, destroying the moral fibre, destroying the economy and destroying the future of our children. It has become the norm to give and accept bribes, to lie, to cheat and threaten violence to our fellow citizens. We must have what we want, whatever the cost, and we do not listen to our brethren but make raucous declarations instead. We are consumed with, if not entirely convinced by, the daily declarations of our fugitive ex-prime minister, who tries to convince us that his aims are benign and in the interests of Thailand and the downtrodden masses, but whose actions would seem to loudly declare his selfish and single-minded purpose of returning to Thailand and reclaiming the funds and power confiscated from him when deposed from power.
To our shame, we persist in violence to obtain the results that we want with regard to the Temple of Preah Vihear and in the southern provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. This behaviour is hardly likely to contribute to the results we wish to achieve.
We, in Thailand, do not listen to reason and we are not willing to enter negotiation and compromise. So we, of all people, should understand that the only route to peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians is through direct negotiation between the two parties. Peace cannot be imposed through external action and declarations broadcast in the halls of the UN in New York.
I would suggest that Khun Kavi might be more understanding of the dreadful, complex problems of the Middle East if he considers the verse in Matthew 7: “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?”
