Yingwai Suchaovanich compares the marriages between elderly foreign men to younger but poorer Thai women to prostitution (Letters, Feb 7). But why just pick on those people?
How many middle-class women in America who aren’t even poor want to marry a man for his money? Go to a singles bar in New York City on a Friday night and you’ll see many secretaries there hoping to meet a rich doctor or lawyer who will marry them. They even have a saying in America: “It’s as easy to fall in love with a rich man as a poor man, so why waste your time with a poor man?”
Once I was watching an American television talk show when I saw a fat, ugly woman in the audience get up and say: “If a man wants to date me (assuming any man could be that desperate!) but he doesn’t make more money than I do, then he can go shove it.” The other women in the audience loudly applauded.
So, is it fair to condemn an expat who moves to Thailand or the Philippines hoping to marry a young pretty girl when the alternative is to go back home where fat, ugly women will tell him to “go shove it”?
