Zaks, the new pub on Sukhumvit Soi 11, is doing its bit to keep the price of a decent glass of wine reasonably priced despite heavy state taxes. And the food is pretty yummy too!
You don’t need to dress up and rob the ATM to enjoy an evening with good food and good wine at Zaks Winepub and Restaurant, which just opened three weeks ago. Taking over a former Italian restaurant, it has two spacious floors with a scenic balcony for smokers and a sizeable garden adjacent to the street.
In the cellar are fine wines from all over the world. If you’re an aficionado, Zaks is a good option to nurture your habit, and if you’re a rookie, this is where you can sample and learn without going bankrupt.
More than 20 different wine suppliers ensure that the selection of Old World and New World reds and whites remains vast. They’re priced at Bt100 to Bt120 per glass and Bt800 and up per bottle.
The highlights include a bottle of Amarone from Italy for Bt2,500, vintages by Edward de Rothschild starting from Bt1,400, and Beringer Old Vine Zinfandel and the French wine Sancerre, both for Bt2,000.
There are cocktails, too. General manager Keoma is a “cocktail master” from Rome, now busy in Bangkok creating delicious blends like the sweet-and-sour Sdrubo (Bt240) with Absolut Vanilla, lychee liqueur, sugar, lime juice and fresh passion fruit.
If your tooth isn’t so sweet, get a sizeable and refreshing Sparkling Zaks (Bt240), which combines Prosecco and the Italian aperitif Aperol. An array of standards with twists is also tempting, like the Strawberry Mojito (Bt240). A small local beer can be had at Bt100.
Getting hungry? American chef Albert Leach uses his expertise in French cuisine to churn out an extensive menu of foreign favourites such as tapas, wood-fired pizzas, salad, pastas and desserts, the prices starting at Bt100.
