Language learning advice was spot-on

Re: "Some tips for learning English, as demand for speakers is set to rise", Opinion, February 13.

I would like to thank Prof Gerald W Fry for his insightful and workable advice drawn from his own rich experience in learning 14 foreign languages, particularly for his comment that “language learning can be a delightful experience. It need not be painful and costly.”
As a matter of fact, I have literally followed his strategy – vocabulary development, pronunciation, the Internet and the media, contact with native speakers, and English for a specific purpose – years before his article, and can attest to its effectiveness in improving communication skills. Today I enjoy reading The Nation, watching American presidential debates and Whitney Houston’s funeral on CNN and listening to National Public Radio for news and entertainment.
I hope his article finds its way into the English departments of Thai colleges, universities, as well as all schools around the country so that some drastic changes in the English curriculum and testing can be made and implemented as far as possible – with the approval of students and administrators.
Teachers and students should be made aware that the only sure way to master a language is to practice and use it regularly in a friendly and supportive environment. Heads of English departments and school principals everywhere must set an example by using English as much as possible on their work days.
Finally, the Minister of Education, whoever you are, please take note. This is a unique opportunity for you to accomplish something worthwhile for the nation.
