Catastrophe needed to wipe out dinosaurs

Re: "Needed now: Alternative politics to get us out of this mess", Opinion, February 23.

Once again Suthichai Yoon puts his finger firmly on the problem. Politics in Thailand is moribund, with the same old suspects coming round and round again to claim their comfortable seats on the gravy train, with the small party leaders extracting more than they are entitled to by acting as king-makers. The whole squalid game is quite literally rotten to the core, and the Thai people know it. The writer states so correctly that now is the time for a renaissance in Thai politics, but I wonder if there is a messianic leader in the wings and acolytes to follow him to lead Thailand to those fertile and fruitful uplands that surely await.
Sadly I fear that the grip the leathery old sharks have on the game is so iron-like that if such a figure were to appear, and a party be formed, these dinosaurs would unite to do all in their power to preserve their feathered nests, and strive to drive the impudent usurpers out of existence. So all we can hope for is a cataclysmic event similar to that which swept the previous archaic life forms from the face of the planet, as such beasts do not become extinct of their own accord.
