Letter on Thai history contained errors

Re: "Revising Thai history will not be easy for anybody", Letters June 24.

Unfortunately, Lung Kip’s letter tries to do exactly that – his letter is littered with false statements.
Firstly he states that the 1932 “Promoters” were all aristocrats educated abroad. Wrong. Plaek Phibunsongkhram’s parents owned a durian orchard, and he was educated in Thailand, although he subsequently undertook military studies in France. Secondly, he states that between 1932 and 1948 Thailand had no king. Wrong. Thirdly he implies, but does not state specifically, that all royal properties were returned to the royal family. Wrong. Some palaces formerly owned by members of the royal family remain in government ownership.
This gentlemen needs to do a bit more historical research before sending off any more seemingly erudite but factually flawed letters.

Editor’s note: The original letter was edited and some explanatory details cut, as it was very long.
