We'd be better off eating each other

Re: "Eat dogs, reduce disease", Letters, September 8.

Last Saturday The Nation published a letter by Frank Mallory from Canada proposing that more dogs should be eaten in Thailand. As he opines, there are millions of feral dogs in Thailand that often cause sickness to human beings.
Millions of feral dogs? In my extensive travels through Thailand I’ve never come across a feral dog in 30 years. In the health statistics I can’t find any case of sickness caused by dogs, therefore the [supposed] millions of baht in savings in healthcare costs by eating dogs to diminish the amount of disease is a fantasy. Moreover, who would guarantee that only feral dogs would be eaten? Dogs are unique animals with a place in human history incomparable to other animals. Their usefulness is well documented. More problems arise from the millions of feral humans killing and harming each other. Following Mr Mallory’s logic, the world would be better off if we ate other human beings and set aside our cultural idiosyncrasies.
