One would expect the China Daily to blame the Dalai Lama for the epidemic of suicides among Tibetans. They blame him for everything they can. But they claim that Dharamsala (seat of the Tibetan government in exile) “has been inciting such suicidal actions, in a covert but merciless manner that has been proved beyond a doubt”. Do they offer even the tiniest atom of such proof? Not in this article.
Perhaps the China Daily should consider the possibility that Tibetans are committing suicide for the very reasons they say they are: they can’t stand living in the society the Chinese communists have imposed on them. They feel oppressed and deprived of freedom.
No doubt this will bewilder the China Daily. Hasn’t Beijing given Tibetans many material improvements they never had before? Are the Tibetans ungrateful for all the new roads and bridges they now enjoy?
But man does not live by bread alone, as Jesus reminds us, nor by roads and bridges either. The Chinese Communist Party has always been impervious to the notion that human needs extend beyond good roads and a full belly. Maybe some day they’ll wake up. But I’m not holding my breath waiting.
