In the article, Eric Gimenez, executive director of the Food First Institute for Food and Development, claims that we’re wasting so many crops on “biofuel and animal food-lots” that we don’t have enough food for humans. In other words, automobiles and the livestock industries are causing world starvation.
Lester Brown of the Overseas Development Council said years ago that if Americans cut back
on their consumption of meat by just 10 per cent we could save enough grain to feed 60 million people.
In his book “Animal Liberation”, Peter Singer writes: “the inefficiency of meat production means that those who eat meat are responsible for the indirect destruction of at least 10 times as many plants as are vegetarians”. So if people really believe that plants feel pain, they are not helping the plants by eating meat.
I know my critics will again complain that I’m imposing my vegetarian philosophy on them. It’s always about “them” – and not about the animals, the starving children or even the plants that my critics claim to care so much about.
