Mehew letter was worth reading

Re: "Effusive eulogies also offensive", Letters, April 19.

When someone gets a boil on their behind, it is wise to try and find a competent doctor to lance it. While the doctor is lancing the boil, the patient is cursing him or her, but after a time, all of the pain disappears. Objective people put the lancing aside and examine the final result. Great leaders know this and practice it. Politicians simply lie and tell you that you are going to be okay.
Ronald Reagan was cruel in some respects, but I suspect that, like Margaret Thatcher, he was cruel to the right people for the right reasons.
I suggest that you read the letter written by Alan Mehew, also in the April 19 letters column. It is a great example of being objective, and you might learn something from it. I did, and now I must apologise to Mr Mehew for my previous remark about not caring about the opinions of Englishmen. He did a great job of making my opinion appear foolish.
