Synthetic meat: not soon enough

I agree with Jason Baker (Letters, August 13) that laboratory-grown hamburgers made from animal cells could greatly reduce the number of animals raised for food, as well as the environmental damage associated with animal farming.

There is also an effort to “grow” chicken meat in the laboratory through the same process.
Unfortunately, as Jason noted, it could be at least ten years before such food is sold commercially. During that time, billions more animals will be slaughtered and the environmental damage will be devastating.
