How many civilian lives is too many?

While on the surface it sounds moral to say America will not tolerate Syria using chemical weapons, I'd like to ask, if America could tolerate 100,000 civilians being killed in Syria by conventional weapons, why can't it tolerate 1,000 being killed by che

If America is so concerned about civilian lives, why did it carpet-bomb Vietnam, killing an estimated 1 million civilians?
What justification was there to invade Iraq and kill 100,000 to a million Iraqis? Not only did America support Saddam when he used chemical weapons against the Kurds and Iranians, but if Saddam hadn’t invaded Kuwait, America might have helped him develop nuclear weapons, as it helped him to develop chemical weapons.
Would it make sense to bomb Syria and possibly kill more civilians than the chemical weapons killed? Will we sleep better at night if America helps the rebels win and then al-Qaeda has control of the chemical weapons? Is it just me, or is the whole world crazy?
