In the novel "Of Human Bondage", W Somerset Maugham wrote: "You will find as you grow older that the first thing needful to make the world a tolerable place to live in is to recognise the inevitable selfishness of humanity
Thais live in a society that is more unselfish than most others (in my opinion), and therefore Thais do not realise how truly selfish, uncaring and cruel other parts of the world can be.
Gullible Thai ladies do not know how easy it is for unscrupulous people in, for example, Africa to erase their identities and turn them into permanent sex slaves.
In the same cited novel Maugham wrote: “It might be that to surrender to happiness was to accept defeat, but it was a defeat better than many victories.”
The promise of money is the sought-after victory for these ladies, but a safe life with some happiness in Thailand is obviously more desirable than a promise that could lead to anonymity and slavery.
It is better to be safe than possibly forever sorry.
