Dining at a dizzying height

A new restaurant brings great cocktails and fusion food to an office building's 47th floor. The view's good too

THE PERFECT place to escape Silom’s notorious peak hour traffic while enjoying drinks, music and perhaps a meal too, the newly opened Cloud 47 rooftop bar and bistro offers a terrific view over Bangkok’s central business district.
It’s owned by new-wave restaurateur Pheeraphon Pipawakorn, who ran the popular Bangkok Bistro Riverfront as part of the two-month pilot project that introduced Asiatique to the world.
Designed to resemble paradise, the bistro and its mezzanine have a cubic theme and are all in white with the changes of hues as the sun sets giving the decor a heavenly glow. The bar adds the colour and is well stocked with a good selection of whisky, vodkas, beer and the makings of nine different mojitos. Live music is provided nightly by 15 local bands whose talents range from funk, jazz and soul to pop rock and folk.
“After my first bistro closed, I spent quite a while looking for a new location that would attract people wanting to chill out over drinks and music,” Pheeraphon says. “As the name implies, the concept here is dining in the clouds and my aim is to promote Cloud 47 as a casual hangout with affordable prices.”
The wine cellar is impressive, offering more than 2,000 wine from all over the world. The food is mainly fusion, with some interesting dishes that combine western favourites and Thai ingredients.
We’re invited to sample Fresh Salmon with Spicy and Sour Sauce (Bt180), Smoked Salmon Salad (Bt280), Pasta Pad Kee Mao with seafood (Bt280), Pork Knuckle and Sauerkraut served with mashed potato and spicy sauce (Bt580) as well as Sirloin Steak served with tamarind
sauce (Bt580) before finishing with Sour Mixed Berry White Chocolate Cake (Bt160).
“We opt for the best ingredients like New Zealand salmon, organic vegetables from the Royal Project and sirloin from Australia.” Pheeraphon says.
But it’s the cocktails that prove the most interesting. They include Strawberry Cheesecake (Bt320), a blend of Absolut vanilla, strawberry and yoghurt, the bright blue Cloud Martini made with Absolut Eylx, blue curacao, apple, lychee, pineapple, lime juice and a fruity foam and the yellow Bangkok Summertime that mixes seven-year-old rum from Puerto Rico with lychee, passion fruit and lime juice.
“We will soon be renovating the restaurant and designing our menu so that the food comes in smaller portions that are ideal for sharing,” Pheeraphon says.
