The People’s Democratic Reform Committee wants reform before an election. Without reform first, they insist, corruption, the tyranny of the majority and parliamentary dictatorship will only grow worse.
Both make valid points.
However, it seems there is no one “respectable” enough to bring both sides together to seek a compromise.
Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and former Asean secretary-general Surin Pitsuwan have tried in vain. That leaves only Thaksin Shinawatra.
If he is sincere and feels gratitude towards his country, Thaksin seems the only person left who can bring peace and prevent a civil war from breaking out.
The question is, is he willing to try?
