Singapore, Australia sailors lead

With over 15 knots of breeze, sailors enjoyed some great racing on day 2 of the 2014 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek yesterday. Principal race officer Simon James set most classes on a windward/leeward first and all enjoyed a long race around the souther

Singapore and Australia are leading the way in IRC Racing I and IRC Racing II classes after two days. Bill Bremner and his crew on Foxy Lady VI are schooling the rest and with two more wins yesterday they extend their lead in IRC Racing I to six points.
Oi! got back into the mix with a second in the first race and a third in the second race, trading places with Island Fling. In IRC Racing II it’s the Australian boat Jessandra II, racing at Phuket Raceweek for the first time, who with an international crew and local Phuket sailing stars Scott Duncanson and Mia Gillow onboard remain undefeated after two more wins yesterday. Two second places for another Australian entry, Foreign Affair, saw them move up to second overall at the halfway point.
Another win yesterday for Sail in Asia Pinocchio and they are sitting pretty on three points in the Cruising class, while a first for Venture in yesterday’s sole race for the Charter/Bareboat class has them tied on points at the top with Little Eva.
Two races for the Multihull Racing fleet saw John Coffin’s Java get their first win on the board, scalping Asia Catamarans Hurricane who had to settle for second. In Race 2, the positions were reversed and Asia Catamarans Hurricane now lead by two points overall. It has become a two-horse race in the one-design Firefly 850 class between Mamba Advanced Racing and defending champions Twin Sharks, and it was Mamba who got their first win on the board in Race 1 yesterday to put pressure on the Twin Sharks.
At the start of the second race, Voodoo and Moto Inzi were caught napping and Mamba Advanced Racing lead Twin Sharks off-the-line while the others started a good two minutes or more behind. Being the better starter in almost all races so far, Mamba Advanced Racing lost ground and was overhauled by Twin Sharks on the long course, having to settle for second in Race 2. Joining the races a day late was Simon Morris and his crew on Sirius, last year’s Classic class winners, and they hit the ground running yesterday scoring the win ahead of Seraph in second.
Organised by Media Business Services, the Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek ends on July 20.
