Something truly amazing happened in Rayong this Loy Krathong just gone.
Each morning I walk my dogs at dawn on Mae Ram Phueng beach and for years past on the morning after Loy Krathong it has been littered with the remains of polystyrene and plastic krathongs.
This year Thais were exhorted from all quarters, including high ranking monks, to use environmentally friendly bread or banana-stem krathongs.
The message seems to have gotten through. In my six kilometer walk along the beach I did not see one polystyrene krathong.
