Looking at the picture of 28-year-old Surat Maneenopparatsuda being hugged by his young daughter after he was saved from jail by an unidentified good Samaritan, my eyes welled with tears.
Congratulations are due to the Maneenopparatsuda family for having emerged from this heart-rending experience, and to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) under Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra, for being so kind in offering what assistance they could, including allowing Surat to keep his job with the BMA.
The law is the law, and we must respect it. Nobody can argue with that fact.
But for a poor and hard-working person who finds one day that he has unintentionally and innocently run afoul of the law and cannot disentangle himself, it must be like being in hell.
Our thanks should also go to the mysterious donor who paid the Bt133,400 fine, releasing Surat from having to spend 667 days in jail.
It shows there are still good people in this society. May God bless you!
